This is the fifth and final card from my Garden Class. These step cards are intriguing. They are quite simple to make and so much fun to decorate. The trick is to have something on each layer or step that doesn’t compete with any other image on another step. Rather you should try to have images that compliment or work well together. For this card I choose the Elements of Style Stamp Set because I really wanted to use it in a different way than just on a card front. I also knew I wanted to place it in the Scallop Oval Frame.
Okay this is what I did. I started with a 10-1/2″ x 5″ piece of Very Vanilla Card Stock. Then I scored it at 1-1/4″, 2-1/2″, 4-1/4, 6″, and 8-1/4″.
I folded it with my Bone Folder in mountain and valley folds like you would fold a fan. The first fold is a mountain fold. You should have two valleys and three mountains when done.
On the front step I cut a 5″ x 1-1/2″ strip of Old Olive Designer Series Paper and scalloped the top. I adhered it and tied a piece of Always Artichoke Grosgrain Ribbon around it. On a piece of Very Vanilla Card Stock I stamped the “Birthday Wishes” from the Watercolor Trio Stamp Set in Always Artichoke, punched it out with the Oval Punch and layered it on a piece of Always Artichoke punched out with the Scallop Oval Punch. I cut a small butterfly with the Beautiful Wings Embosslit out of So Saffron.
For the second or middle step I stamped part of the flower bouquet from the Elements of Style Stamp Set in Chocolate Chip Ink and stamped the hummingbird from the same stamp set in Perfect Plum Ink. I stamped a few flowers from the bouquet on a piece scrap piece of Very Vanilla, colored it and cut it out. I glued it onto the middle step as shown and had one leaf extend upwards for some depth. I cut out the hummingbird and place it so it looks as though it’s getting nectar from a flower. On each top corner, with a Dauber. I sponged Always Artichoke; again for depth.
The last step was decorated with the Big Shot and the Scallop Oval Frame out of Very Vanilla. I then stamped the bouquet of flowers in Chocolate Chip Ink on the middle part of the frame. For the coloring I used a combination of Markers and Watercolor Pencils. I cut another frame out of Old Olive Designer Series Paper and adhered the outer part of the frame over the Very Vanilla frame. I placed the stamped middle back by using a little tape on the back and secured the oval frame to the last step with two brads.
And that’s how you make a step card. It’s not as complicated as it looks but you will certainly “Wow” any one you send it to-if you can to part with it.
Thanks for looking!
