Stampin’ Up! Guitar Birthday Card: For John…

Today is my almost son-in-law John's birthday. John is a Special Ed teacher in the Bronx & owner of Miller's Green, a landscaping business. So, John has little free time. When he does have a little time, he can be found listening to music and  playing his guitars. I tell you, he's a keeper!

For John's birthday I knew I wanted to do a card in the shape of a guitar. It was quite an easy shape to draw and cut along one edge of the card. First, I started with Soft Suede Card Stock and as I was playing around with the other shapes and colors,  I knew the Soft Suede wasn't doing it for me. Sorry, Soft Suede! I then took a piece of More Mustard Card Stock and liked that better immediately, but it looked flat. I really have this thing about flat looking cards. Then I got this ideas and here's what I came up with:

Here's what I initially sketched out and then cut it out of Soft Suede. I started with a half sheet of card stock, 8-1/2" x 5-1/2" scored at 4-1/4".

I then decided to use More Mustard card stock with a Soft Suede 2" circle, Basic Black 1-3/4" circle and all the other guitar parts are from Cajun Craze. The Cajun Craze piece that looks like a lima bean is the pick guard and the other rectangular piece is the neck of the guitar, cut off at the top of the card.

Even after I cut the More Mustard guitar shape, as I mentioned earlier, it looked flat to me, so that's when I decided to cut 3/4" x 5-1/2" strips.

I distressed the edges of each strip with Cajun Craze Ink and a Sponge Dauber and then I pulled out my Background Woodgrain Stamp. Love it! I inked it up with Cajun Craze Ink and laid each distressed strip on the top to stamp it up! (haha)

The result was realistic looking wood strips. This part was was so much fun and pretty rewarding. Once all seven strips were distressed and inked, I placed a piece of an Adhesive Sheet on the front of the card and I carefully laid each strip down butting each other. This is a great technique for you to use whenever you want to add a wood grain look to your projects.

For the bridge pins I used 6 Silver Brads and for the guitar strings I first tried some of my beading wire, which didn't cooperate at all. I decided to use some retired Stampin' Up! Silver Elastic Cording I have, It worked like a dream and resembles guitar wire more then the wire did. Go figure… I cut other pieces Of Cajun Craze Card Stock to use as the saddle and bridge. Here's a detailed view of the brads and silver elastic cording.

Now, here's the deal, if you would like the template to this guitar, for your personal or class planner, all you have to do is leave me a comment and EMAIL ME and you'll receive a FREE PDF Guitar Template in your mailbox.

I certainly hope you make this card for the guitar player in your life.

This one's for you John!

Blessed Birthday Wishes xox

Diane,  This is absolutely AWESOME!!  My husband's birthday is next week and he builds guitars — not as a business, but he has sold several.  I would love to be able to make this for his birthday.  You did a great job and it really looks like a guitar.  Thanks so much for sharing.
